I met cartoonist and graphic novelist Alison Bechdel at a
TCAF event this past Saturday. Bechdel is on an international tour promoting her new book,
Are You My Mother?
Bechdel is the creator of
Dykes To Watch Out For, a syndicated comic strip that ran for 25 years. Her first book,
Fun Home, is an autobiographical graphic novel that chronicles her experiences coming out as a lesbian, focusing on her relationship with a closeted, depressed father.
Are You My Mother? is a spiritual sequel, looking at her relationship with her mother and at her journey through psychotherapy.
I’m a few chapters in to
Are You My Mother? and it's fantastic! What I love about Bechdel’s books is that they are very dense and don’t baby the reader. She deals with dark subject matter humorously and unflinchingly. Definitely a must-read for queer graphic-novel enthusiasts. Also, is it weird I have a total dyke-crush on Bechdel?
