For those of you who lack transportation, beyond a TTC token, let me appeal to your friends with benefits: perhaps a drive to the RIM capital of the world should be on your radar this weekend. After all, in addition to the fresh perspective getting out of the city provides, nothing can open the mind like an art show. And Fab
was recently contacted by artist Chris Austin
to invite us all out.
Despite using an unconventional colour palette for his human subjects, Austin captures a realistic veneer in his paintings. Unlike the pop art realness of the Beautiful Dirty Rich
show we recently saw
, the faces appear unfinished, but rather than lacking completion, look to be in transition -- both emotionally and physically. It’s an awkward and difficult state to capture, and he’s done so convincingly (at least from the secondary sources I can see!). As the title of his show suggests, maybe the emerging, evolving personas brought to life on canvas will be gay butterflies in the next show. Maybe not.
As I won’t be able to get there myself, I’m appealing to all of you to go and report back. A quick peek at his blog
shows some colourful photographs of his preparation for tomorrow’s show, some studio insight and examples of previous works.
Thank you, Chris, for contacting us. We wish you the best!
