“The Goodhandy’s brand is strong but associated with some things we haven’t done for two and a half years,” says co-owner Todd Klinck. “When most people think of Goodhandy’s, they think sex club and of the live sex shows that haven’t taken place since December 2009. It’s a memorable reputation, because nobody was really doing it but us.” As of Sept 1, Goodhandy’s will be known as Club120, a rebranding that has been a couple years coming: “We’re not trying to say we’re cleaned up; we’re just trying to un-confuse people. The rebranding is all about getting people to see the venue as a dance club.”

Klinck denies that Goodhandy’s is a sex club, but says, “We are a sex-positive space — always have been and always will be.” And Club120 will still have private booths where people can do what they like. Also, the Goodhandy’s name will still be associated with Club120, but only as Goodhandy’s events during the week, which will include the very successful trans nights. Most of the events that took place before will continue to occur, but, with the exception of Sodom, Saturdays will be freed up for a broader audience: “Saturday nights are all dance nights, DJ focused, and everyone’s welcome.” At the grand opening, DJ Sumation will spin from the stage rather than overlooking the dancefloor, and patrons will have a chance to get used to the new name, updated décor, sound system and lighting. — Jeremy Willard
