Xtra's Vancouver edition reports that Conservative activist Kari Simpson is
filing a human rights complaint against the Vancouver School Board for promoting hate . . . against people who promote hate. Simpson says that by using “made-up” words like homophobia, the VCB is fostering “hatred and contempt for those who acknowledge the scientific, medical and economic harm associated with certain sexual practices.” Gay sex causes financial harm? No wonder I'm so broke all the time!
Simpson says that she has the support of a number of groups and that they’ll come forth if they have to. “When we make that public, if we need to, we’re hoping that the Vancouver School Board is reasonable in this and sits down and mediates. We’ve indicated our willingness to mediate this with them.”
This may seem like a digression, but comedian Sarah Silverman is one of my favourite people in the world. As she recently and so eloquently said about
the fight for marriage equality to The Hollywood Reporter: “Gay marriage is something that Newark Mayor Cory Booker said it best [about]: Some things are not meant to be a vote. Some things are a right. And if things like that were left for a vote, he said, ‘I wouldn’t be where I am today’ — meaning anything that is civil rights.
Because people don’t always know what’s best. Their fears keep them from being open and being fair. And so that would just be not up for a vote. Gay marriage, legal, with a big fucking apology for the past few years.” Amen, sister.
