“The Henhouse is a great queer venue because we are relaxed and open to everything and everyone. We don’t judge,” says organizer Bobby Valen. “We have an easy, comfortable atmosphere to chat, have some early drinks, pick up hot folks, but we also have an amazing sound system, a great dancefloor and crazy parties. It’s everything a gay could ask for.” Already a hub of gay and queer nightlife, the Henhouse has launched Malebox, a monthly party for trans-identified guys and the people who love them.
“The idea for Malebox came from the need to have a trans-male-identified party in Toronto again. We need a guys’ night out and a place for people to come pick up and cruise,” Valen says. “Also, with Toronto having one of the largest trans communities, and me myself identifying as a trans guy, it seemed logical.” Valen lists Malebox as a spiritual successor for events like Halfcocked, a trans and genderqueer art night, and Stroke, a party for trans guys and men who are into them, at Buddies and Goodhandy’s, respectively. He knows that no matter what gender partygoers are, there will be something for them at Malebox.
“This month it’s all about the tunes. DJ Nik Red is spinning, so I know it’s going to be hot and sweaty. As for parties in the future, always expect the unexpected. Rotating DJs and themes, but know there will always be dancing, flirting and fucking. And maybe a few surprises in between.” So it seems like a watershed moment: a good venue with good music and a history of successful events. Valen adds, “Come to the party and you’ll see what makes trans guys so damn hot.” —Michael Lyons
