Australian diver, and total hottie, Matthew Mitcham was the only out gay man at the Beijing Summer Olympics in 2008, which made his gold-medal victory all the sweeter. His victory was surrounded by some controversy, though, given the fact that NBC cut footage of he and his boyfriend hugging from its broadcast.
Now preparing for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London, Mitcham has said that he does not mind jumping into the
world of sports as a gay role model. He told the
Sydney Morning Herald that he hopes some day sexuality will be as unimportant to success as eye colour, “but until it is easy for sports people to come out without fear of persecution or fear of lost sponsorship income and stuff like that, or fear of being comfortable in the team environment, I don't mind attention being brought to my sexuality in the hope that it might make other people feel more comfortable . . . in being comfortable enough about who they are in their sporting environment.”
This makes Mitcham a total winner in my books, and I’ll certainly be cheering for him when he’s competing in London. Always refreshing to see intelligent, thoughtful, out gay professionals. Needless to say, he’s easy on the eyes as well.
