Not a snap to reinvent

03.22.2012

“I’m a gay artist. I have friends who are positive, and I’m very happy to lend my support and participate in an auction that helps raise money for the work that ACT does,” says Stev’nn Hall, of the AIDS Committee of Toronto’s annual photographic fundraiser, Snap! Hall’s ReInvention, one of the pieces chosen for the auction, was a labour-intensive creation: “I have taken 20 to 25 pictures for this particular piece, and I spliced them all together in the computer so that it would become this large file, but you get all the little detail. I did scratches on the prints, but in addition, I have scratches on other prints that I laid on top of them. Then I literally painted on top of it, using different media, with soft stains or even more aggressive colours. I kept working it up with a series of more paint and more gel. I stopped when I was happy with it.” Where ReInvention is a landscape, the works that comprise Hall’s concurrent exhibition, Manifest, at the Pentimento Gallery are different. The show consists of portraits of men, both “aggressive” and “distressed,” adrift between masculinity and vulnerability. “I bring a sense of cinema into my paintings and mixed-media work. I like the idea of drama, movement or even a narrative that could be inspired by it.”

GregYeah, definitely! Straight-acting is by far the most lsiunting thing someone can say in an ad on a gay web-site looking for Mr. Right now! If you are acting, you are nor really being you. We all have our moments when we might prefer a feather boa to a wool scarf, or another when we get really turned on by an aromatic underarm instead of perfume. And that's all in the same person, eh? People are complex beings who defy labels. I know I'm gay because I love c**k (uncut, of course). Whether I wear construction boots or ballet slippers, makes no difference to that fundamental reality.Be well, (please say Hi to Alex)
