The United States might be all doom and gloom, obsessed with disgustingly homophobic politicians and disgusting fast-food chains, but there’s always a bit of good news.
This past May, Texas politician Mary Gonzalez became known as the first openly identified lesbian elected to the House of Representatives, the federal legislative assembly. In a development even more badass than her election, Gonzalez later
identified herself as pansexual to the Dallas Voice.
Gonzalez came out as bisexual at 21 but found this didn’t completely explain her identity. “As I started to recognize the gender spectrum and dated along the gender spectrum, I was searching for words that connected to that reality, for words that embraced the spectrum.” Gonzalez explained that since coming out she’s dated genderqueer and trans people as well as cisgender people.
