If Brokeback Mountain rocked your boat than you will love Patrick Wang’s first dramatic feature
In The Family, a heartfelt story that centers around two fathers and their son in the Southern state of Tennessee.
“When it comes to our audience and critics I couldn’t be happier,” says Patrick Wang, who wrote, directed and also starred in the film. With a narrative woven around child custody and parental loss, the emotionally honest film has garnered the attention of top critics like Roger Ebert, calling it “One Of The Year’s Best.”
The film became more personal to Patrick through various stages of production. “The thing I realized is that it is so hard to know people. There’s so much we don’t say, there’s so much room for misinterpretation, and it’s so easy when there’s distance between people,”says Patrick, who hopes the film will open doors for everyday conversation, whether that means telling your parents about the first time you fell in love or opening up about your past to a loved one. “You may see someone every day, you may live with this person for years, and yet you don’t know some of the most basic and moving parts of that person,” says Patrick. “Bringing your parents to the movie is one way of starting that conversation.”
