People are people, whatever their parts

Gender as done by Dr Seuss

02.01.2012

This picture's been making the rounds on the internet these past few days, originating from Tumblr, like all things good.

The poem, which breaks down concepts of gender and sex in language that even a Conservative MP could follow, is colourful and sunny and oh-so-cute.

Kind of makes me think of the whole Jenna Talackova trans-woman-in-the-Miss-Universe-competition thing, for instance. People take it upon themselves to make other people's genitals their business. The problem with that being, in its simplest definition, sex is biological and gender is social. An easy way you could explain this to, say a 10-year-old, is that sex is what's between your legs, and gender's what's between your ears! Gold star! A+!
