Puppets get pumped for Pride

Drew Rowsome interviews a closeted puppet from Avenue Q

06.22.2012

“If You Were Gay” is one of the many showstopping numbers in the raunchy hit musical, starring puppets, Avenue Q. It is sung by Nicky to his roommate Rod, who exhibits many closet-like symptoms, notably his love of musicals. “It’s nice to be in a much smaller space like the Lower Ossington Theatre after those years on Broadway,” says Rod, who is accompanied by his hunky assistant Adam Proulx. “The audience gets to see my chiselled features up close.” Avenue Q begins a return run — following a sold-out stint last January — just ahead of Pride Week. “Sadly, we are doing a performance the day of the parade,” Rod says. “But I hear there is more fun at the parties afterwards, anyway. Our puppeteer Andy has made me some excellent pectoral muscles for Pride.” Rod quickly backtracks and emphasizes that the subject of his big number “My Girlfriend, Who Lives in Canada” (“I hear that Vancouver is still far, far away even though we’re now in the same country”) enjoys the new pecs when the love-puppets Skype. “And same-sex marriage,” marvels Rod. “Don’t tell my mother, but I think it’s lovely for people to be with the ones they love. I hope someday to be a married puppet. Of course, I also hope for legs.” — Drew Rowsome

Absolutely LOVE this year's program. High cotsrant, readable pages. Easy to find the show you want (amazing how important dropping The , etc). And the concept absolutely rocks. The pictures, the Yearbook theme, the memories everything is supportive toward helping especially new audiences understand the complexity that is Fringe. I am eager to share my program with folks that don't understand what Fringe is all about. MUCH appreciated!
