Reinventing Tom Gabel

Against Me! singer becomes herself

Musicians often reinvent themselves, though it usually feels shallow and gimmicky, like a marketing ploy to sell more records. Rarely does an artist's reinvention feel so monumental, and marvelous.
 
Punk rocker Tom Gabel of Against Me! has come out publicly as a transgender woman, announcing that she plans to take the name Laura and undergo hormone therapy. Gabel, both a parent and a partner, says that her wife has been very supportive.
 
Gabel’s story in Rolling Stone, which hits newstands this Friday, May 11, explores her history of gender dysphoria and what it means for her band’s future.
