“A slut is a person of any gender who has the courage to lead life according to the radical proposition that sex is nice and pleasure is good for you,” write Dossie Easton and Catherine Liszt, authors of The Ethical Slut. This is perhaps to the dismay of the Toronto police officer who recently told a crowd discussing sexual assault prevention at Osgoode Hall that “I’ve been told I shouldn’t say this, but you should avoid dressing like sluts.” The SlutWalk Toronto’s mission: avoid idiot ideas like that from here on out. “No one should equate enjoying sex with attracting sexual assault,” says the event’s website. “Those who experience sexual assault are not the ones at fault, without exception.” Sluts, allies and everyone else are encouraged to join together to walk, strut, sashay or back it up like Beyoncé all the way to the cops’ front door.
SlutWalkers gather at Queen’s Park on Sunday, April 3, at 1:30pm and head to Police Headquarters, 40 College St W at 2pm. slutwalktoronto.com
