The Dame hangs up her wig

Everage says age is a drag

01.01.2012

In something equally tragic as the American GOP primaries: long-time fashion icon and star of stage and screen Dame Edna will be shelving her “face furniture” after the completion of her latest show, Eat Pray Laugh!

Dame Edna Everage is the drag persona of Australian comedian Barry Humphries and first appeared as a satire of an Australian suburban housewife in 1956. She grew in popularity throughout the 1980s, especially for her parody of Margaret Thatcher. She is well known for her cat-eye glasses, lilac-coloured wigs, flamboyant fashion and her snobbish, scathing humour.

Humphries, who is now 78, says performance has become “gruelling.” As Edna would say, “You have aged tragically, and yet I’m still the same. It isn’t fair, is it, darlings?”
