Toyland with a twist

Harrods' gender-neutral toy department

06.01.2012

Remember the pink aisle? There’s always a pink aisle, although that could start being a thing of the past.

Opulent English department store Harrods has opened its first gender-neutral toy department in London. Instead of being grouped by gender, the toys are grouped by theme. The brand-new renovated Toy Kingdom includes themes like enchanted forest, circus area, candy story, miniature toys and a reading room.

The completely unnecessary gendering of toys goes well beyond the idea that boys like cars, trucks and dinosaurs, and girls like dolls, pink and more dolls. A gender-neutral store means kids don’t have ridiculous expectations forced down their throats when all they want is to have fun.
