Against Me!’s lead singer came out as transgender, announcing she would be living as a woman, undergoing hormone treatment and taking the name Laura Jane Grace. Coming out to her band mates has been a positive situation for Grace, and now
she and the band have spoken to MTV about the experience, painting a fantastic, high-profile picture of what the transition process looks like when it comes to dealing with friends.
Grace spoke about the anguish her repressed identity caused over the years, admitting she would often take out her frustrations and anger on her friends. She also described the difficult situation of bathrooms, saying she’s not looking forward to the time when using either the men’s or women’s washrooms may elicit discrimination, or violence.
Drummer Jay Weinberg talked about asking about pronouns. Probably most heartwarming, bassist Andrew Seward said the only thing he cares about is that she’s happy.
