Underoos was a brand of children’s underwear (by Fruit of the Loom) that debuted in 1978. The package included a matching top and bottom for either boys or girls.
It was more of a costume than just mere underwear. The different styles featured logos of popular superheroes, including Wonder Woman, Shazam, Superman and The Hulk. Favourite pop culture characters — Daisy Duke, The A-Team, Barbie, Yoda, He-Man and GoBots — were also introduced.
The commercials were hilarious! Preteen kids in their skivvies dancing like well-paid Tiny Talent Time contestants and singing lines like “Underoos are fun to wear . . . Ya! Something super new in underwear!”
With Underoos you could secretly wear your favourite character under your clothes to school and feel empowered knowing that Wonder Woman or Han Solo was with you on your journey through hell. They should seriously bring back this shit for adults. Can you imagine? True Blood Underoos with Alcide or Sookie on them or RuPaul’s Drag Race Underoos . . . I’d totally wear Sharon Needles or Nina Flowers. The Avengers Underoos would fly for sure, and don’t start me on Madonna, the Men of Sean Cody or Showgirls Underoos. Nomi Malone underwear . . . seriously, think about it. Pure genius.
