Top 25 divas of all time

Diva expert Zachary Pearse lists the women we love

09.04.2012

In this day and age a diva can be many things: a woman with a temperamental attitude, a goddess who commands the stage, or even a female version of the hustler. It’s almost impossible to group all the fearless females into one list. Undaunted, Fab has gathered a bouquet of categories and come up with the ultimate 25 divas who have shocked and awed with their beautiful voices, outrageous outfits and over-the-top drama!

The Rock Legends

Stevie Nicks: Stevie is not only a rock goddess, but a celebrated meteorologist who discovered that thunder only happens when it’s raining.
Annie Lennox: She is so multitalented she had the great honour of being asked to open for Jessie J at the 2012 Olympic closing ceremonies.
Tina Turner: Dubbed the Queen of Rock and Roll by Rolling Stone, Tina’s given us legs, hair and pipes to love . . . but what’s love got to do with it?

The Survivors

Judy Garland: Even 43 years after her tragic death, Judy lives on through her iconic role as Dorothy. She loved pills as much as we love
her incredible voice, wit and charm!
Liza Minnelli: The original friend of Dorothy may not be able to sing or dance anymore (possibly due to alcoholic rages directed at David Gest), but that won’t keep her down . . .  jazz hands with a Z!
Britney Spears: In just 14 years she’s managed to dance with a snake, marry a snake, suck face with Madonna, shave her head, attack a car with an umbrella, and sell out arenas around the world for “CD-listening parties.”

The Voices

Whitney Houston: Even though she’s gone, I can still hear her screaming “Hell to the no!” from heaven after realizing that her last song is a duet with Jordin Sparks.
Céline Dion: Céline has been quoted as saying, “I humidify my nose with saline everyday.” That’s right: Céline humidifies with saline, and yes, she pronounces them the same. I rest my case.
Mariah Carey: Mimi is always in full diva mode whether she’s showcasing her beautiful voice/dog whistle, showing up to an event hours late or taking care of her child bride.

The Diva-tude

Christina Aguilera: Her voice and talent are undeniable. Just ask Mary J Blige: “I do not like her . . . because she has a nasty attitude!”

The Crossover Queens

Barbra Streisand: Barbra is one of 11 people to have achieved EGOT status (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony). Just don’t interview her or she’ll make you flip your set around to capture her “good side.”
Bette Midler: Anyone who started her music career in a New York bathhouse is definitely making it onto this list. Who could forget her transcendent portrayal of Winifred in Hocus Pocus?
Cher: She’s currently in the studio working on a new album (likely in a Bob Mackie gown and sparkly wig), so I’m “Cher” we’re in for a sixth farewell tour soon!
Dolly Parton: She’s got big tits, Southern charm and her own goddamn theme park that generates millions. And as she famously said, “It takes a lot of money to look this cheap.”

The Icons

Madonna: She’s reinvented herself so many times; we’ve seen her go from sex book to children’s book, Catholic to kabbalist, and Warren Beatty–lover to hydrangea-loather.
Kylie Minogue: This showgirl definitely made the shortlist (of short singers). Could there be another Canadian tour in our future? We should be so lucky.

The Glamazons

RuPaul: This supermodel sashay-shantayed into our hearts with her charisma, uniqueness, nerve and talent, and she won’t RuPaulogize for it!
Grace Jones: The original queen of over-the-top couture was rocking many looks that Stefanie Germanotta would go goo-goo over before she could even say Gaga!
Lady Gaga: Mother Monster has the voice, the fashion, the drive, and she wrote “Born This Way” in only 10 minutes! I could have, too,
if I had the sheet music to “Express Yourself” lying around!

The Broadway Belters

Jennifer Holliday: Nobody can sing “And I’m Telling You I’m Not Going” like her. And if you think you can, she’ll show up to your American Idol finale to chew you up and spit you out!
Patti LuPone: If you go see this Broadway legend live, you’d better behave or she will not “oh-preciate” it. In fact, she’ll stop the show and ream you out! (Search YouTube for “Patti LuPone stops Gypsy.”)
Dame Shirley Bassey: Nobody “Gets the Party Started” like this dame and her rockin’ 25-piece orchestra!

 The R&B Divas

Beyoncé: As Oprah says, “Listen to cut #3,” called “Diva,” from her I Am . . . Sasha Fierce album and Beyoncé will tell you herself why she’s on this list!
Diana Ross: The original Beyoncé serves us big hair, gowns, rhinestones — and a temper tantrum if you even think about looking her in the eye.
Aretha Franklin: This super-sized diva loves delivery and has delivered some of the greatest songs of all time. Respect!

The Top 25 Divas Of All Time? What, No Donna Summer!

There’s always surprising omissions on any list, but the omission of Donna Summer on this list had me shaking my head and feeling obliged to write in my dismay.

Vocal critics have praised her for being both incredibly versatile with a delivery that comes across as effortless. I’ve also seen the word ‘rare’ when it comes to her vocal abilities.

Some facts; Mariah Carey’s longest held note – 20 seconds; Donna Summer’s – 18 seconds; Whitney Houstons’ – 15 to 16 seconds. What is ‘The Voices’ section based on (I have no vocal facts on Céline as I don’t care)?

Mrs. Summer was a ground breaking artist. From the sexiness of “Love To Love You Baby,” to the seductive “I Feel Love,” to the joy of “Last Dance,” to the total fun and sleaziness of “Bad Girls,” to the gorgeously pounding “Our Love,” she continued to break musical barriers.

She did not treat songs as a vehicle to show off ‘gimmicky’ vocalizing, always putting the song first and not over-singing a damn track in her entire career.

Between 1975 – 1980 she put out 7 studio albums (2 of which were double album sets), 1 live album and enough one-off singles to fill another album; one of which was her duet with Barbra Streisand. Nobody had that kind of output! She also wrote a few songs for other artists. Worked Hard For The Money.

She was funny and humble and gracious. A true diva; not a self-centred spoiled one. And she had a lot more R&B in her than Diana or Beyonce (RE: ‘The R&B Divas’ section).

Like a fine wine; the more I discover about her, the better it gets. In 2010, at 61, she put out “To Paris With Love” (written for the house of Louis Vuitton and yet another #1 US Dance Billboard charting for her)…give it a listen (original mix is my favourite) and turn it up and enjoy that red.

All in all the list put together is good; I just thought Donna would be on it. Thought Barbra would have been on it too.
