Pre-Pride primpin’

Max MacDonald's pre-Pride must-haves

06.12.2012

The sight of Super Soakers being dusted off, drag queens in rehearsals, boutiques being raided,
personal trainers juggling clients, tanning beds glowing like Easy-Bake Ovens and hairdressers dissolving in tears
can mean only one thing: the countdown to Pride. Whether your budget is $5 or $1,000, it’s a
season when gays should treat themselves, so I’ve put together a list of fun, stylish items for the season.

Play it

DJ Nyte Hawk, a fixture on the Church St bar scene, goes mainstream on Sunday, July 1, from 1–2 pm, at the Church-Wellesley main stage. Expect mixes so hot you’ll want to strip, just like Jack, a dancer at Flash.

On Nyte Hawk: Christopher Bates’s Karlovy Lazne short-sleeved jacket, $239; Desperado waxed denim jeans, $239; Ultra gloves, $80; vintage limited-edition 1987 Cazal sunglasses, $810.
On Jack: 1980s American Apparel short-shorts, $30; Alexander McQueen for Puma sneakers, $200.

Bag it

Jump from Paper is a fun line of bags with cartoon-like outlines. Though slim in appearance, each bag has a roomy interior to accommodate iPads, tablets, books, magazines and everyday accessories. A zipper bottom expands the bag for extra room. $100.

Available at Rolo Store, 24 Bellair St, rolostore.com

Wrap it

Levolver is a new jewellery line by Chuck Bell. His quirky necklaces consist of bold charms, crystals and various embellishments, all attached to
adjustable leather cords. Jack’s piece, made just in
time for Pride, is $75.

Strap it

Worth by David C Wigley spins the harness into this sleek, sexy, interpretation. The body is made of nylon webbing, which gives a snug fit but still allows movement. Special order only, $275.

Eat it

Popcorn returns this summer as a healthy snack option, and Popcorn Indiana’s Original Kettlecorn is Dr Oz’s snack of choice. According to Muscle & Fitness magazine, “By substituting one cup of plain, unbuttered popcorn for a one-ounce bag of chips, you’ll save 135 calories and 10 grams of fat.” $4.

Available at Whole Foods Market, 87 Avenue Rd, wholefoodsmarket.com
