Wade and Michael – four years
“You realize you’ve really made a difference in someone’s life.”

Michael and Wade are not a couple. Together the pair cochair
the annual Friends for Life bike rally, a fundraiser
for PWA sponsored by Scotiabank.
It was the ride to Montreal four years ago that first introduced
the two. It was Wade’s first year participating in the rally and a
mutual friend introduced him to Michael, who in Wade’s eyes
seemed like a seasoned bike rally veteran. On the third day, when
everyone made a mad dash to do their laundry, their mutual friend
suggested they pool their laundry together. “We bonded over our
dirty laundry,” says Michael with a chuckle. “We got to know
each other over beers during wash, rinse and dry.”
What was their first impression of one another? “You don’t get
a more genuine person than Michael,” says Wade. “He’s strong
willed and brave.” Michael says he was amazed at how friendly
and open Wade was. “And he’s cute too,” ads Michael.
When it came time for Michael to search for a new co-chair,
Wade seemed like the perfect candidate. “Our personalities and
styles compliment each other,” says Michael, who tends to “wing
it” while Wade always plans and organizes. Both are still accepting
donations for their rally fundraising goals and are looking forward
to participating again in a rally that brings together people from all
walks of life with different stories and reasons for participating.
“Bike rally riders are extraordinary people doing extraordinary
things,” says Michael. “It restores my faith in humanity. It would
be great if we could take part of the rally and incorporate it into
our everyday lives.”
“It is a great equalizer,” says Wade. “It really brings
people together.”
